Karl August Gehsmann (“Luke”), 81, passed away Thursday, December 14, 2017, surrounded by family members at his home in Mendham, New Jersey.
Karl was born April 27,1936 to August and Anna Gehsmann. He is survived by his beloved wife Eileen of 57 years, his 6 children Scott, Kristin, Kurt, Karl, Kori and Karleen, 18 grandchildren and his sister Dorothy Ackerson.
Born in Monsey, NY, Karl resided in Rockland County, NY, North Carolina, and his last 12 years in Mendham, NJ. He served in the National Guard and the US Army during the Berlin crisis.
Karl was known for his strong character and extraordinary work ethic. Karl was a passionate family man. The special bond that he shared with each of his grandchildren will remain in their hearts forever. Karl loved the outdoors, The Three Tenors, Nat King Cole, country music, the Detroit Tigers, and Duke Basketball. As a Rockland County umpire for 35 years, he was inducted into the Rockland County Hall of Fame.
Karl served as an usher at Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church in Mendham, NJ. Despite several overwhelming physical and mental obstacles, Karl always persevered and never lost sight of the extreme pride and joy of his special family.
Visitation is on Sunday, December 17, 2017, from 1-5pm at Bailey Funeral Home, 8 Hilltop Road, Mendham, NJ 07945. A funeral mass will be held at Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church, 8 West Main Street, Mendham, NJ on Monday, December 18, 2017 at 10:30 A.M. Cremation will be private. Final resting place will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, 140 Mount Airy Road, Bernardsville, NJ. Donations can be made to a mental health research charity of your choosing.
