Hilda Bernadette O’Doherty (nee Naughton), of Chester, NJ passed away on October 7, 2017 (Feast Day of the Holy Rosary) surrounded by her family. She was 81 years old.
Hilda is survived by her children, Hilda McGonigle of Los Angeles, CA (Tim), Jackie O’Doherty of Califon, NJ and her favorite dog, Kyley, Joseph O’Doherty of Newton, NJ (Michelle, “intended”) and Noreen Cacchione of Chester, NJ (Tony); her grandchildren, Molly McGonigle (Mike), Rory McGonigle (Emily), Noreen McGonigle, Christine Keyes (Steven), Joe O’Doherty, Ryan O’Doherty (Nicki), Patrick O’Doherty, Maggie Cacchione and MaryKate Cacchione; her four great-grandchildren, Martin, James, Emily and Michael; and her brothers, Patrick Naughton of London, England and Noel Naughton (Sarah) of Edison, NJ and her sister, Joan Hassett, of Spring Valley, Arizona; and grandmother to many loving dogs. She is preceded in death by her husband, Joseph O’Doherty and her sister Mary Reidy, of Coventry, England.
Hilda was born in Limerick, Ireland to John Naughton and Nora O’Connor. She loved her simple life with her warm and loving family. She married her longtime sweetheart, Joe at Holy Rosary Church on April 22, 1957 in Limerick. They honeymooned on a boat to Canada and settled in London, Ontario.
In 1960 they moved to New Jersey where they grew their family, started many business enterprises and participated in many political campaigns. Hilda was a longtime member of St. Lawrence the Martyr Church in Chester.
Hilda was a warm and loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She was a woman of deep love, great faith, with an unwavering devotion to her family and her Irish heritage. She was a steadfast advocate for women and nurtured these beliefs in her children and grandchildren. Hilda will be remembered for her strength, courage, humor, kindness and generosity and the joy she brought so many and for her spectacular smile she shared with the world.
Visitation will be Wednesday, October 11th 4-8pm at Bailey Funeral Home, Mendham, NJ. A Funeral Mass will be Thursday at 10am at St. Lawrence the Martyr Church, Chester, NJ.
